Walter’s wrists burned where the rope had dug itself into his skin. The chair was medal and bolted to the floor and there was no pushing it. The table in front of him had plates of food arranged neatly, the smell hit Walter’s nose and he remembered with difficulty the last time he ate a full meal, it must have been at least a week. Walter’s stomach gargled and he suddenly found that his mouth was awash with saliva. Looking around Walter could see darkness beyond the cone of blight light thrown by the single overhead lamp in the room. The last thing Walter remembered before waking up in the room was sitting on the sidewalk with his hands out begging for spare change. Winter was on it way and he was trying to get as much as he could before the cold forced him off the streets for the rest of the year. A carriage pulled up out of nowhere and a man in a blue overcoat and matching top hat climbed out. He approached Walter with what looked like a coin in his hands. Walter saw the gold gleam and half his breath. Just before the coin was within reach there was a sharp pain at the back of his head and he was out cold. There was a gentle voice in at his left ear.
“Hello Walter” said the voice.
“Who…who are you? Why did you take me here?” he stammered.
“My name Cale, and I took you here because the streets are no place to have a nice long talk”
“Talk? About what?”
“I have an opportunity I want to discuss with you”
